Every city has a slogan. For St. Louis, it’s “Gateway to the West,” and in Casey, Illinois, it’s “Big Things, Small Town.” Despite its size—Casey’s population is just shy of 3,000—the small town is home to 12 of the world’s largest attractions. Each was designed by Jim Bolin, who kicked off this effort to put Casey on the map with the World’s Largest Wind Chime. As rumor has it, Bolin designed the World’s Largest Wind Chime to lure drivers off the highway and into the town of Casey. Turns out, it worked! Load up on car snacks and spend a day in Casey, where you can spot the World’s Largest gavel, swizzle spoon, golf driver, mailbox, and a whole lot more.
World’s Largest Wind Chime
According to the city’s website, this was the town’s first crack at breaking a world record. Construction of the windchime began in 2011, and by December of that year, the chimes were added. The towering wind chime stands at 54 feet tall, and the longest chime in the musical structure is 42 feet long. It’s hard to miss, and not just because the chimes are anything but quiet. The structure stands alone in a grassy knoll across the street from another one of Casey’s oversized attractions: the world’s largest rocking chair. 107 E. Main.
World’s Largest Rocking Chair
Apparently, it’s harder to build an extra-large rocking chair than you might think especially when that rocking chair is 56 feet tall and weighs more than 46,000 pounds. The gigantic piece of furniture took two years to make and debuted in 2015. In order to snag the world record, rocking was a must, so on the day of its big reveal, several strong volunteers set to work pushing the chair back and forth. Before this, the world’s largest rocking chair was in Fanning, Missouri, which held the world record for about seven years. For everyone’s safety, you can’t climb onto the rocking chair, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. 117 East.
World’s Largest Mailbox
This enormous mailbox isn’t just for show—it actually works. There’s a ladder at the back of the mailbox that visitors can climb to get inside. Once there, they can mail a letter, which causes the red flag on the mailbox to go up. The mailbox was added to Casey’s long list of massive attractions in 2015. 19 W. Main.
World’s Largest Teeter Totter
Measures 82 feet in length, this attraction was designed so that visitors could actually ride it. It looks like a normal walkway at first, but look a little closer, and you’ll realize you’re about to step onto the biggest seesaw of your life. The attraction is open every Saturday during Casey’s tourism season. 111 E. Main.
