A Chicago man was sentenced to 73 years Thursday after he was convicted in May of fatally shooting a friend in Gary after they argued on the way back from a barber shop.

Larry Boston, 21, claimed self-defense.

He was convicted of murder, armed robbery and a firearms enhancement, records show. The victim was identified as Charles Golden, 20, of Chicago.

A witness told police Boston and Golden were arguing in a car over “dumb stuff”, threatening to kill each other when Boston pulled out a gun and shot Golden as the car was near 47th Avenue and Broadway Avenue, charges state.

The driver jumped out of the car while it was still moving, running toward a nearby gas station, telling them to call the police. He saw Boston trying to pull Golden out, an affidavit stated.

Boston was a friend of a friend he knew for about two years, the man said. Boston and Golden had fought in the past but it never got to the point of serious physical violence before, he said.

He believed Boston waited till they neared an off-street and the shooting was intentional, he said. Only the driver and Boston had weapons in the car, police said.
