1) Illinois’ first social-equity marijuana dispensary opens in Chicago. Ivy Hall Damen opened yesterday in Bucktown and sells a variety of products, including edibles and vaporizers. Its ownership is 61% Black. Though the law legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois included “social equity” licenses for businesses led by minorities, applicants found it difficult to break into the industry. Ivy Hall Damen became the first of such to open in Illinois.

2) Chicago’s official Christmas Tree lighting in Millennium Park scheduled for next week. Starting Nov. 18, a 55-foot Colorado Blue Spruce tree from Morton Grove will light up in Millennium Park as Chicago’s 109th annual Christmas Tree. This year’s ceremony is set to start at 6 p.m., with a pre-show at 5 p.m. The event will feature live performances, fireworks and more. The tree will be on display through Jan. 9.

3) Lightfoot urges feds to fund Amtrak’s proposed $850 million revamp of Union Station, local train services. The proposed Chicago Hub Improvement Program would improve passenger flow and ventilation, establish new passenger train routes into Union Station from the south and allow Amtrak and Metra trains to run more often. Mayor Lori Lightfoot is among 56 regional mayors supporting the plan, and said the project would reduce Chicago’s carbon footprint.

4) Matriarch of Shedd Aquarium’s beluga pod dies. Mauyak, an 11-foot-long, 1,500-pound female beluga whale and matriarch of the aquarium’s beluga pod, has died. She was 41. Mauyak, whose name meant “soft snow,” arrived at Shedd in 1997 from Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.

5) Public money powers manufacturing incubator mHUB’s growth. A city panel approved $17.6 million in tax increment financing for mHUB. The money, along with another $9.6 million from the state, is part of a $46.8 million venture that will allow mHub to purchase and move to an almost century-old building near the Fulton Market District. Since its founding five years ago, the organization has helped 500 startups and business expansions, leading to the creation of 4,000 jobs.
