CARLINVILLE — The long arm of the law is boosting its reach digitally through a new website that offers the Carlinville community access to crime- and public safety-related information.

CarlinvillePolice.com launched Friday. The site, developed in partnership with the CrimeWatch Network, is intended to provide an easier way for residents to help fight crime and stay informed, Chief David Haley said.

It also has a downloadable app for use on most cellphones.

“This new website is the perfect entry point for establishing better police and public partnerships,” he said. “Technology gives us the opportunity to communicate with the public and the anonymity of the tech avoids the potential risks of sharing information with the police.”

Haley said other police departments have used the technology and had success with it. The CrimeWatch Network was developed for law enforcement agencies that wanted geographically targeted information sharing and gathering.

Signing up for the site allows people to get e-mail alerts about crimes in certain areas, see recent arrests, and submit tips to police. Residents also can register alarm and camera systems and share information through social media.
