The origins of the early Catholic community in the St. Wendel/Wendelin area. The first church St. Ignatius was erected on January 1, 1861, and the name changed to St. John the Baptist in 1863. A vote in 1870 would divide the parish and create the new parish of Holy Cross 2 miles north at the present location.
