1) Community activist turns attention to safety locks to promote responsible gun ownership. Known for his anti-violence efforts, community activist and politician Andrew Holmes is working to promote a simple tool he says will help prevent gun deaths and injuries. Holmes wants to distribute thousands of free gun safety locks to the community. (Chicago Sun-Times)
2) CTA buses rerouted away from Lake Michigan amid ‘severe weather’ conditions. Buses on the Jackson Park Express, Jeffery Jump, Inner Lake Shore/Michigan Express and Outer DuSable Lake Shore Express routes were redirected from the outer lanes of DuSable Lake Shore Drive yesterday due to heavy fog. It is unknown when the routes will resume normal service. (NBC Chicago)
3) Fred White, Chicago-born Earth, Wind & Fire drummer, dies at 67. Chicago-born Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White died. He was 67. Born Frederick Eugene Adams in 1955, White joined brothers Verdine and Maurice in Earth, Wind & Fire in 1974, playing on hits including September and Shining Star. (CBS Chicago)
4) Howard Brown Health workers set to go on strike in protest of planned layoffs. Howard Brown Health confirmed last week it is moving ahead with proposed workforce reductions to close a $12 million revenue shortfall. Some workers have planned a three-day strike, which begins today, in front of several locations across the city over what they describe as unfair labor practices. (ABC 7)
5) Chicago home to one of America’s loneliest cities. According to the Chamber of Commerce, Chicago—the third largest city in the United States—is the 24th loneliest. Among all homes in the city, almost 40 percent, or 446,442, are occupied by one person. (WGN TV Chicago)
