Illinois police shooting: manhunt for three suspects after cop shot dead in Fox Lake – TomoNews
FOX LAKE, ILLINOIS — A massive manhunt is underway for three suspects in connection with the killing of a Fox Lake police officer early Tuesday morning.
At 7:52 a.m., Fox Lake police officer Charles Joseph Gliniewicz radioed in a report of suspicious activity involving three individuals near Route 12 and Sayton Road during a routine patrol, Lake County sheriff’s spokesman Chris Covelli said at a news conference.
Shortly after, Gliniewicz said he was pursuing a black male and two white males on foot. Gliniewicz then lost contact but was found shortly afterwards in a marshy area by backup with a gunshot wound, said Covelli.
Gliniewicz had reportedly been stripped of his gun and other gear, according to Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. Gliniewicz died at the scene.
“At this time, we’re asking all area residents to remain inside. Report any suspicious activity, any suspicious people, by dialing 911 as we still have three offenders at large,” Covelli told a news conference.
“We lost a family member,” Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmidt said at an afternoon news conference. “G.I. Joe was the father of four boys and a dedicated officer.”
At least four schools are on lockdown and as of Tuesday afternoon law enforcement members are still combing the area with canine units and a helicopter in search of the suspects.
The suspects are considered armed and dangerous, Covelli said. He urged residents to stay indoors and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities.
