Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Candidates begin filing to run in 2023 Chicago mayoral race. There were 10 announced candidates leading into the first day of filing, but that number was reduced by one when Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) announced he will not join the mayoral race but instead run for reelection. Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she will wait until Nov. 28 to file. The objection filing deadline is Dec. 5, and the election is Feb. 28. If no one gets at least half the vote, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held April 4.

2) City elections board misses deadline to make all polling places accessible, 30 years after ADA became law. Fewer than 10 percent of the city’s polling places are marked as accessible for people with disabilities—and a third of the city’s 50 wards had no sites considered compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners says it is working to make more sites accessible and letting voters know which ones are not before February’s municipal election.

3) FAA green lights new O’Hare International Airport terminal. The Federal Aviation Administration has given the green light for a $7.1 billion expansion project to replace Terminal 2 with a “global terminal.” The O’Hare Global Terminal will link domestic and international flights in one location. “The project is expected to start with two new satellite concourses, providing about 1.3 million square feet of gate and amenity space,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The FAA signed off on the project after completing a four-year environmental impact study. Construction is slated for spring.

4) Chicago Public Schools’ application deadline is next week. The deadline to apply for enrollment in a Chicago public school next fall is fast approaching. CPS has tried to simplify the process for attending a school other than a student’s assigned neighborhood school by using a single online application known as GoCPS. Here is what applicants need to know to navigate the process before the Friday, Dec. 2 deadline.

5) Want to get rid of fall leaves? Call 311 to compost, but do not throw them in trash. It is illegal in Illinois to throw bags of yard waste, including fallen leaves, in with regular garbage. According to scientists, leaves that end up in landfills release methane, which ultimately contributes to climate change. Instead, city officials encourage residents to bag leaves and other yard waste and call 311 to request a pickup for composting.
