On March 9, 2022, Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam held a press conference at the State Capitol announcing the launch of the Illinois Assyrian Caucus, joined by Senators Cristina Castro, Adriane Johnson, Laura Murphy, and Mike Simmons, and Representative Mark Walker. API Vice Chair Atour Sargon also delivered remarks to offer a community-based perspective on the value of the caucus. Illinois is first in the nation to establish a statewide caucus on Assyrian issues.
