Now that the fall season premiere season is finally upon us, I am practically buzzing with excitement.

It’s difficult to contain myself because that means Chicago Fire Season 13 is right around the corner!

Last season’s finale was rife with cliffhangers and jaw-dropping moments that have had all of us reeling since May. We’re more than ready to dive back in.

Before we do, I’ve been thinking about characters I’m hoping to see more of in the coming season.

Season 12 was a condensed installment, consisting of only 13 episodes instead of the usual 22.

The return of a full season means we’ll hopefully have more time to spend with some of the characters, developing their individual storylines in a way that there wasn’t time for last year.

We’ve also learned that Season 13 will introduce at least one new major character.

Dermot Mulroney is joining the cast as Dom Pascal, who will take over the role of firehouse chief now that Eamonn Walker’s Boden has departed.

Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong Dermot Mulroney fan. As a kid, I watched My Best Friend’s Wedding enough times that I can quote it. I couldn’t be happier about this new addition.

But what about returning members of Chicago Fire’s cast who didn’t get enough screen time last season?

While we hope to see a lot more of everyone at the firehouse, there are seven characters that truly deserve to take the spotlight in Season 13.

Some of these folks have been around since Season 1, and others are new as of last year.

There are a few whose arcs whose arcs should expanded because they’re just all-around entertaining characters.

Others are shrouded in mystery, and we deserve to get to know them better next season.

As we get ready to reunite with our favorite first responders, let’s look at the characters who deserve to be in the spotlight on Chicago Fire.

Randall “Mouch” McHolland

Mouch is undeniably one of the best characters on Chicago Fire.

Mouch is a quintessential veteran firefighter with all the skills and knowledge to prove it. Still, he’s humble enough to know he still has things to learn.

His marriage to Trudy from Chicago P.D. is one of the best parts of his character.

Ideally, we’ll see more of his home life in Season 13, including Trudy and their relationship.

Mouch has been through a lot, but he’s the kind of guy who shows up when people need him. We need to see more of that wholesome masculinity on the show.

Plus, I can’t wait to see how he reacts to the new chief, and how he fares on the lieutenant’s exam!

Darren Ritter

As of last season, Ritter was the only openly gay character on any OneChicago show.

Unfortunately, that means he’s carrying all the weight of LGBTQ+ representation in the Chicago universe. That’s reason enough for this character to deserve the spotlight!

He’s in a new relationship with a cop, and there’s a lot of potential for an interesting dynamic there, especially since Fire and P.D. often work closely together.

Ideally, we’d get to see more of Ritter’s relationship on screen, and I’d love to see him get involved with a local LGBTQ+ firefighter’s union or community to bring that part of his identity further into the spotlight.

Ritter is also now one of the only Black characters on the show, which highlights another representation issue that fans have expressed some concerns about.

In the best case scenario, we’ll get to know Ritter better in Season 13, and the showrunners will work behind the scenes to relieve some of the pressure on him regarding representation!

Jack Damon

The handsome and mysterious stranger who joined the firehouse last season was revealed during Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 13 to be another secret Severide sibling.

This bombshell is sure to be a main focus of Season 13.

The fallout for Severide and Stella will be highlighted, but I really want to get into Damon more, too.

What was his upbringing like? Did he always know Benny was his father and that he had other siblings?

I’m mostly curious about what expectations Damon has of Kelly now that he knows the truth.

It’ll be really interesting to see how that plays out. It would also be worthwhile seeing more of the budding friendship between Damon and Novak, the other newbie at 51.

Violet Mikami

I try hard not to play favorites on these shows to be fair to everyone in my reviews, but I can’t help it. Violet is my favorite character on Chicago Fire.

She’s tough, smart as a whip, and knows how to take control of a situation.

During Season 12, we saw her take her new partner, Novak, under her wing and mentor her, showing just how good a leader Violet can be.

She’s been through hell with previous partners, and her relationship history ranges from tragic to catastrophic. My hope for her in Season 13 is that she and Carver figure out their drama and get their happy ending.

Seasons 10 and 12 both featured high-profile wedding episodes, with Brettsey being the most recent. Could we possibly see a Mikarver wedding in the near future?

Professionally, Violet deserves the spotlight in some way, too. Maybe we’ll get to see her receive recognition for her hard work this season.

Hermann Is Smug - Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11Hermann Is Smug - Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11

Christopher Herrmann

Herrmann is another original character who comes to Season 13 as a veteran.

At the end of last season, Chief Boden told Herrmann to consider taking his place as the house’s leader, but we know that, professionally, Herrmann isn’t quite ready for that jump.

However, despite having been through a lot in his personal life in recent seasons, Herrmann has stepped up in a big way.

Throughout Season 12, we saw him show up for his coworkers and act as a therapist, a friend, a father figure, and a confidant.

While the addition of Mulroney’s character means Herrmann won’t be rising to the rank of chief, he’s still an irreplaceable part of the firehouse.

In Season 13, we’d like to see Herrmann take the spotlight as a social and emotional leader if not a professional one.

Carver - Chicago Fire Season 11 Episode 22Carver - Chicago Fire Season 11 Episode 22

Sam Carver

Does anyone ever really know what’s going on with Carver?

Well, Violet does now, because he ended last season by confessing his love to her.

He’s gone on another furlough, though, so we’ll see if Violet was able to catch up with him and exchange any more words. This cliffhanger has kept us on the edge of our seats all summer.

For Carver, life has been a series of disappointments, tragedies, and trauma.

In Season 13, this character deserves the spotlight in a positive way. Maybe we’ll get another wedding, or, at the very least, someone could bake him a cake.

Considering he made the short list of TV’s angriest characters, Carver definitely seems like he could benefit from some comfort food.

Novak on Call - Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 9Novak on Call - Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 9
(Adrian S Burrows Sr/NBC)

Lyla Novak

There’s not much known about Novak just yet, so hopefully, we’ll get to dig into her character more during Chicago Fire Season 13.

After a brief confusion last season where we couldn’t figure out exactly what her name was, this newcomer to the ambulance became a quick fan favorite.

While we’re still not 100% positive on her name, sources show that it’s actually Lyla, and she goes by Lizzie. I think we’ll stick to calling her Novak for now. Either way, she’s another of Chicago Fire’s characters who deserve the spotlight next season.

Novak’s friendship with Damon is growing. Both of them have mysterious backgrounds that we’re hoping to learn more about in the coming episodes.

So far, there hasn’t been a hint of anything romantic between them, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

More than a romantic storyline, though, I’m hoping to learn more about Novak’s history. Let’s find out how she became a paramedic and why she’s so good in a crisis.

(Adrian S Burrows Sr/NBC)

The writers and showrunners have done an excellent job over the last 12 seasons creating characters that we care about and are excited to see again.

I have no doubt that Season 13 will bring more of the same. If you need me this season, you can find me fangirling over Dermot Mulroney and wildly speculating about whether Damon has sinister intentions.

Chicago Fire returns September 25 at 9/8c. I hope to see you all back here after the episode to review and discuss!
