I and a few people have been working on remastering the original files from Billy Joel’s debut in 1971, Cold Spring Harbor. Next will come remasters for Billy’s previous work, The Hassles, Attila, The Lost Souls, and demos from the early 70s, circa Cold Spring Harbor-Piano Man sessions. We also discuss his lesser known music/life. If you love Billy Joel’s deeper tracks, this is the server for you!

Bruce Scaffe (Created, produced, and directed “The Sessions”) –
It was Feb of 72.
The show was the Session which I created, produced and directed. The shows were recorded on 2 inch quad videotape. Billy Joel & Friends was one of 67 shows in the series. Originally broadcast on WSIU-TV Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. It was rebroadcast on over 20 TV stations across the Midwest and East. In the summer of 1973 it was broadcast across all the stations of PBS along with 13 other Session shows as a summer replacement series.

Artie Ripp was Billy Joel’s agent and mgr. at the time.
The show was Billy Joel, piano and vocals, plus lead guitar, bass, and drums. The setting was a French drawing room complete with ornate background, chandelier, candles, marble platform and sheer curtains.
The band drove from St. Louis to Carbondale arriving very late at our studios. They were tired and unshaven but played wonderfully. A great show but had no studio audience.
Afterwards I travelled with Billy Joel and the band to Kansas City MO for his performance in front of many college booking agents looking for talent to play at their colleges.
All the songs on the show were off of Billy’s first album, Billy Joel, Cold Spring Harbor.
The show was great and of course Billy was totally unknown at the time

– Those that were present received a copy of the show. Larry Russel still has his copy, but likes to not share it due to Sony owning the material.
