1) Multiple-alarm fire in Hyde Park draws 250 firefighters, leaves one in critical condition. At Several emergency crews responded to a fire at a four-story building at 5130 South Kenwood Ave. at about 3:30 a.m. “Hoarding conditions” on the second floor were a barrier to firefighters as they entered the building. An elderly woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The fire was upgraded to a multiple-alarm fire due to the intensity of the blaze.
2) Community activist Ja’Mal Green gets top spot on ballot for Chicago’s mayoral election. The placement lottery was held yesterday. Community activist and entrepreneur Ja’Mal Green will be the first name listed, followed by Sophia King, Kam Buckner, Willie Wilson, Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas. Mayor Lori Lightfoot—who skipped the lottery—will be listed seventh, followed by Frederick Collins, John LoGalpo, Roderick Sawyer and Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia. The election is Feb. 28.
3) Chess tournament pairs students, cops in a safe space that lets kids ‘flex their intellectual muscles.’ The Cops & Kids Invitational Chess Tournament, now in its seventh year, kicked off yesterday at Guaranteed Rate Field. About 120 students from 10 Chicago public schools participated in the event. The goal of this program is to give students an opportunity to communicate with police in a relaxed environment. A closing tournament will be held later in the school year.
4) Former Bears player part of team bringing hotel, stores, apartments to Motor Row landmark building. Former Bears defensive end Israel Idonjie and a team of investors bought the building in 2018. The four-story, 38-unit complex in the iconic Hudson Motor Building received key city zoning approval in mid-November, but the proposed overhaul awaits a City Council vote. The development is part of the effort to revitalize Motor Row, which was designated a Chicago Landmark District in 2000.
5) Airbnb launches Chicago restaurant guide, highlighting several neighborhoods. The restaurant guide features 27 food venues across six Chicago neighborhoods: Andersonville, Logan Square, Pilsen, Chinatown, Bronzeville and Hyde Park. Restaurants, breweries, bistros and bakeries are represented. Airbnb hosts, the Illinois Restaurant Association and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce partnered to compile the list.
