From the crossing of Lookout Mountain to the two armies meeting along Chickamauga Creek, the Battle of Chickamauga represents one of the greatest campaigns of the American Civil War. William S. Rosecrans and his Army of the Cumberland launched a stellar campaign, called the Tullahoma Campaign. That led them to cross Lookout Mountain to hopefully cut off Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee from Atlanta. The plan did not go as expected, but did result in the capture of Chattanooga. Rosecrans and Bragg engaged near Chickamauga Creek and what resulted was the second bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. This animation covers day one of the battle.
