Chicago’s Archbishop Blase Cupich was among many sharing their reflections Saturday following the death of Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Benedict XVI, who was 95, died early Saturday at a monstary in Vatican City, according to a bulletin issued by the Vatican. He retired in 2013.
“Today we join Pope Francis and Catholics across the world in mourning the death of Pope Benedict XVI, who has gone home to the God he served faithfully” said Cupich in a statement.
“Throughout his life as a scholar and as a churchman, he showed us what it means to fulfill the ancient command to love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind,” Cupich said in the statement.
He has served as a “bridge to the future, reminding us all that the reform and renewal of the Church is ongoing,” Cupich said in the statement.
Cupich will preside over Mass for the “repose of the soul of Pope Benedict XVI” at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., on Monday at 8 a.m. The public is welcome to attend and it will also be will be live-streamed here.
Additionally, the public is welcome at any of several memorial Masses planned in the archdiocese’s six vicariates on Wednesday and Thursday in the suburbs and on the Northwest and South sides of Chicago.
