CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Saluki Cross Country teams head to Terre Haute, Indiana to compete in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, hosted by Indiana State on Friday, October 28. The Women’s 6000 M race will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT, and the Men’s 8000 M race will begin at 9:00 a.m. CT.

The Salukis began their season at the Redhawks XC Invite, with the women’s team placing third and the men’s team placing first. At their last season meet, the Bradley Pink Classic, the Women’s team placed 26th and the Men placed 15th. Throughout the season, the Women’s team has been led by Junior Rachel Anderson. The Men’s team has often been led by Sophomores Dawson Smith and Ethan Senti

In the Missouri Valley Conference Pre-Championship Coaches Poll, the SIU Women’s team is estimated to finish in seventh and the men are estimated to finish in fifth. Both the Women and the Men’s races are predicted to be led by Bradley. Twelve total teams will be competing in the Women’s race and eleven will be competing in the Men’s at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

The centerpiece of the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course was opened in 1997. The vision of late Indiana State head coach John McNichols, the course features a challenging, yet manageable, mix of uphill and downhill sections and its simple straightaway start that stretches for nearly the first kilometer before a turn. This will be the fourth MVC Championship hosted at the course, as Indiana State previously hosted in 2000, 2002 and 2011.  The course has also hosted 13 NCAA Championships (2002, 2004-11, 2013-14, 2016, 2019), the NCAA Great Lakes Regional six times (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2017, 2018), and the Indiana Intercollegiate seven times (1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015). Indiana State will also host the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the course in 2022.

The Saluki women’s team is set to run the 6k on Friday at 8:00 a.m. CT for the first race of the day. The weather forecast calls for mostly cloudy conditions with temperatures in the low 40s and an east-northeast wind at 5 to 10 mph. The men’s action begins at 9:00 a.m. CT for the 8k. For more information, visit 2022 Championship Central or follow along with live scoring on TimingMD.
