Maywood police are searching for a former NFL player after they found his mother dead near a creek behind her home.

Family members told police on Saturday that they couldn’t locate Myrtle Brown, 73, or her son Sergio Brown, 35, according to the Maywood Police Department. Officers started a missing person report and made attempts to find both individuals.

Sergio Brown attended Proviso East High School in Maywood and the University of Notre Dame.

During a second and wider search, police said they discovered Myrtle Brown unresponsive close to a creek to the rear of her residence. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer ruled her death a homicide Sunday afternoon, saying she suffered multiple injuries during an assault.

Police said they are still trying to find Sergio Brown. He’s a former safety in the NFL, playing for seven seasons from 2010 to 2017 with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills, according to ESPN.

Nick Brown, a son of Myrtle Brown and brother of Sergio Brown, remembered his mother as a “strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny,” woman in a Facebook post Sunday.

“Mom always told me, ‘tough times don’t last’ and our last conversation about tough times being temporary is my beacon of hope,” he wrote.

He asked anyone who knows where his brother is to share information with police.

“I want him to know that I love you and please come home,” Nick Brown wrote.

Detectives asked anyone with information about his location to contact Maywood Police Investigations at 708-368-4131 or the Maywood Police Department anonymous tip line at 708-450-1787.
