First funerals for Highland Park shooting victims take place – Chicago Tribune

Good afternoon, Chicago.

Two victims of the Highland Park mass shooting are being laid to rest by family and friends today, and another visitation is planned for tonight.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe this morning to honor 63-year-old Jacquelyn “Jacki” Sundheim. Speaking through tears, Rabbi Wendi Geffen opened the service by saying: “We are horrified. We are enraged, sickened, aggrieved, inconsolable for the terror that has befallen us and robbed us of Jacki.”

As that service was ending, another was getting underway for Steve Straus, 88, at a synagogue a few miles south in Evanston. “We tell his story. Steve was a good guy. We will never be the same, but we will carry him with us,” Rabbi Rachel Weiss said.

Hundreds gathered at a Lake Forest vigil last night for victims of the shooting and Lake County Board members called for a statewide assault rifle ban.

ICYMI: Tribune reporters visited the alleged shooter’s family home and pulled police records to paint a picture of a turbulent home life.
