In the first five track and field seasons after Texas Tech opened the Sports Performance Center, all eyes on winter Saturday afternoons often turned to the high-jump ring as Red Raider stars Trey Culver, JaCorian Duffield and Bradley Adkins frequently soared well above 7 feet in crowd-pleasing competitions.
This season, the spotlight might well shift over to the pole-vault pit as everyone keeps close watch on Zach Bradford, the new guy with the funky hair and the glittering resume.
A three-time Big 12 champion and a five-time first-team all-American for Kansas, Bradford made his Texas Tech debut during Saturday’s Corky Classic by winning his event with a vault of 18 feet, 4 3/4 inches. His personal record is 19-0 3/4.
Only two other vaulters remained in the competition when Bradford entered. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior from Bloomington, Illinois passed on the first four heights, cleared the next five bars on first attempts and then missed on three tries at 18-7 1/4.
“I’d say it was a good first opening meet to the year,” he said. “I had some struggles last year toward the end of the season, so it’s good to bounce back. I think that’s the highest I’ve jumped in probably about a year now.”
Since beginning his college career at KU in 2019, Bradford has qualified for every NCAA championship meet indoor and outdoor and finished fifth, sixth, third, fifth, seventh and ninth. He’s won the past three Big 12 titles and finished second in the two before that.
At this time last year, though, Bradford was about to hit a rough patch. Competing in Nebraska, he lost his grip on the pole during takeoff and fell backward onto the mat on his neck and back. The next meet at Clemson, he no-heighted.
The experience shook him. He conferred with a sports psychologist throughout last year.
“It was almost like I was hesitant, scared to vault,” he said, “which in this sport, you can’t be hesitant. You can’t be scared or then it just gets worse. So I was just battling through that. I was on small poles all season. …
“Now I’m really confident, so we should be good the rest of the year.”
Bradford arrived at Tech in August, choosing the Red Raiders over Virginia Tech after he had his name entered into the NCAA transfer portal. The Red Raiders also got former Texas pole vaulter Warren Miller who, in the past four Big 12 meets, has finished fourth three times and third once. Among their returnees are Kyle Stifflemire, who took third at the 2021 Big 12 outdoor, and Colton Naffziger, who finished fifth as a freshman at last year’s Big 12 indoor.
In choosing the Red Raiders, Bradford had a good idea of what he was getting.
Bradford has a background of club track and field with Naffziger, who’s also from Ilinois, so they conferred. This weekend was Bradford’s sixth time to compete in Lubbock. He won last year’s Big 12 indoor title here.
“I love this facility,” he said. “The runway’s super fast. Having this big turf field to run on keeps the shins healthy and staying healthy throughout the fall season and fall training’s all I could really ask for.”
In his first meet as a Red Raider, the favorite in competition also was the easiest to spot. Bradford dyed his brown hair red on one side, bleached it on the other side and dyed a black stripe in between.
He plans to do a different design every week.
Jordan Scott, a former NCAA champion vaulter from Kansas, dyed his hair before competitions.
“I met him when I first started vaulting, so he’s kind of an inspiration,” Bradford said. “So I figured, my last year, I’ll have some fun. It kind of keeps me distracted from competition, have a little fun.”
Tech is back in action Friday in the Red Raider Open. Tech teams are home six weekends out of seven in February, culminating with the Big 12 championships on Feb. 24-25.
