Free speech? Teacher stomps US flag in class exercise, fired by Illinois school board – TomoNews
MARTINSVILLE, ILLINOIS — Martinsville Junior-Senior High School English teacher Jordan Parmenter was fired by the Martinsville School Board on Tuesday in a 6-0 vote.
The board’s decision comes following a May 15 incident during which the teacher allegedly used a small United States flag during a lesson on free speech in his classroom.
One of his students reportedly pointed out that the way Parmenter was holding the flag was disrespectful, and the teacher then allegedly dropped the flag on the ground and stomped on it explaining to the class that freedom of speech extends to the desecration of the U.S. flag.
Parents and faculty at the school however, found the free-speech demonstration offensive and Parmenter was placed on leave before the June 29 decision to terminate his employment.
The teacher said he plans to speak to his union representative regarding the board’s decision, but had no further comment.
