Illinois Hardest Hit Program Recap

In 2010, the federal government created the Hardest Hit Fund® (HHF) to provide targeted assistance to families in states hit hard by the economic and housing market downturn. The Illinois Housing Development Authority was designated to utilize federal Hardest Hit Funds and to develop foreclosure prevention programs aimed at helping unemployed or underemployed homeowners who were struggling to make their mortgage payments. Since the program launched in 2011, the Illinois Hardest Hit program provided more than $428 million dollars in mortgage payment assistance to support more than 22,000 families in 101 out of 102 Illinois’ counties.
