If you’re gonnna bring a gun to a knife fight with a sushi chef, you’d better make sure it’s a real gun.

Clayton Dial, 23, found that out the hard way when he tried to knock off the Kamakura Japanese restaurant in Champaign, Illinois, where sushi chef Tetsuji Miwa was on duty.

Dial pulled out what looked like a pistol and demanded money from the terrified 17-year-old hostess.

“He said, ‘Give me your money. Open the drawer.'” Miwa, who’s worked at Kamakura for eight years, told the Chicago Tribune. “That’s when I instantly grabbed my sushi knife, walked up to him, wrapped my arm around his shoulder and asked him what he wanted. He saw the blade, got scared and started running.”

Miwa and two coworkers caught up with Dial outside and engaged in a struggle. Miwa didn’t want to use his knife because it was expensive.

“It’s pretty expensive so I didn’t want to damage it or use it. I was telling him, ‘Don’t make me use this.’ As soon as the other two managers came out, I set it down to the ground very carefully because I didn’t want to damage my blade,” Miwa told the News Gazette.

Dial was able to escape to a getaway car, while a white van driven by his girlfriend, 23-year-old Kelsey Cabellero, was seen leaving the scene.

Both Dial and Cabellero were later taken into custody.

Police said Dial admitted to them he had a drug problem and was robbing the store to pay a debt.
