Men’s Swim & Dive hosts Bellarmine For Senior Day Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. – – The Ball State men’s swimming & diving program will complete the home portion of its 2022-23 season this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 28, at noon in a dual meet versus Bellarmine. This will be the fifth dual meet for the men’s team (1-3).

In addition to the action in the pool, the diving program will host an exhibition with Anderson.

 

Prior to the start of the meet, Ball State will be sending off seniors Noah Berryman, Wyatt Blake, Owen Chaye, Dillon Freiberger, Bryce Handshoe, Aiden Maurer, Zachary Moody, Landyn Riester, Patrick White & Jack Wolfred. These Cardinals have a combined 13 individual appearances in the Ball State record books. The women’s team will also be honoring its seniors.

Ball State finishes the weekend by traveling to Fishers High School for the Butler Invite at noon on Sunday, Jan. 29. Along with the Cardinals and host Bulldogs, Eastern Illinois, Hillsdale, IUPUI, UIndy, Valpo, Xavier, and Youngstown State are slated to compete in the meet.

 

This will be the third invitational, and sixth overall competition, for the men’s team which has two third place finishes among the eight-team fields at the Indiana Intercollegiates (Oct. 22) and the Miami Invitational Dec. (1-3) so far this season.

 

SATURDAY’S EVENT LINEUP VS. BELLARMINE:

200 Medley Relay, 1000 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Fly, 50 Free, 3M Diving, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 500 Free, 100 Fly, 1M Diving, 200 IM, 400 Free Relay

Last time out the Cardinals were able to pick up seven event wins and three pool records on the day, but came up short against the defending MAC champion Miami RedHawks 168-132.

 

Joey Garberick started the record-setting day off for the Cardinals finishing first in the 100 breaststroke. Garberick’s time of 55.49 set the new pool record, besting his own mark of 56.67 from last season. Garberick added to his day later in the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.19).

 

Senior Owen Chaye also joined in with his record-setting swim in the in the 50 freestyle. His winning time of 20.72 bested the previous mark of 20.76 set by Western Kentucky’s Kicker Vincill in 2000. Chaye would complete the freestyle sweep later in the meet, with a first-place effort of 45.82 in the 200.

 

Chaye was also a part of two first place relays helping the 200 medley relay (1:31.71) claim the victory. Chaye was joined by Garberick, sophomore Ethan Pheifer, and senior Bryce Handshoe. To finish his day, Chaye would take part in another pool record, leading off the 400 freestyle relay which clocked in at 3:04.47. He was joined on the swim by senior Jack Wolfred, Pheifer, and freshman Jacob Siewers as they surpassed the previous mark of 3:04.94 set in 1994.

 

The Cardinals also had success in the diving well, starting with freshman Porter Brovont earning an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark of 325.20 in a second-place effort on the 3M board.

 

Senior Wyatt Blake would follow by winning the 1M competition with a score of 297.30, just shy of the NCAA Zone mark of 300 for the board.

 

The Ball State men last faced off versus the Knights on Jan. 28, 2022, at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center where they claimed nine event wins and cruised to a 157-100 victory.

IN THE MAC RANKINGS – MEN:

In the latest NCAA Division I Top Time Rankings as compiled by CollegeSwimming.com, the Cardinals have 10 student-athletes ranked in scoring position in their respective heading into the Bellarmine matchup.

 

Junior Joey Garberick is BSU’s top-ranked swimmer, holding the number one spot in the 100 breaststroke with his time of 54.62.

MAC AWARD WINNERS:

So far this season, the Cardinals have one MAC award, with freshman Porter Brovont earning MAC Men’s Diver of the Week honors. This award came after last Saturday’s dual versus Southern Illinois where he won 1-meter diving (301.30) and had a second-place finish in 3-meter diving (306.50). His 1-meter diving score was the 10th-best individual score in program history and a NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark.

EVENT WINNERS:

As a squad, the Cardinals have chalked up 22 individual wins and six relay victories over the first five meets of the season. Senior Owen Chaye leads the pack with seven individual event victories including a new pool record win in the 50 freestyle (20.72) last time out versus Miami.
