Penn State head football coach James Franklin addressed the media after his team’s 63-7 win over Delaware in the team’s second game of the season. Here Franklin’s full comments on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel.

The Penn State offense was methodical and “efficient”, according to Franklin, during the team’s first half. Drew Allar’s squad led drives of 13, 9, 9, and 9 plays for touchdowns to start the game. Afterwards, the team punted once and then had a two-minute drive of 6 plays that resulted in a touchdown.

“I just thought we were very efficient. We were able to stay on the field; we were able to sustain drives. We were able to convert on third down, converted a few times on fourth down.”

Franklin felt the same way about his defense, sans a 66-yard touchdown on a run play from Delaware running back Marcus Yarns.

“We had the one play where we were not gap sound. We had the one play that we were not gap-sound. The ball found that gap, and they’ve got some talented guys that can run. Just a really good example of everybody’s got to do their job on a consistent basis.”

Despite that mistake, the defense only gave up 20 yards rushing on the other 23 run plays, including sack yardage negated from the total. That includes most of the third and fourth quarter where the backups for the Nittany Lions took the field on both sides. Franklin was pleased with how his team performed.

“I challenged them at halftime and said, ‘Listen, we have to play better in the second half than we did in the first half. You can make the argument that we gave up a touchdown in the first half and didn’t give up one in the second half. It’s a start. I’ll have a better idea after we watch the film to really grade these guys but it’s a start.”

Penn State is 2-0 so far this season and has its first road game of the 2023 season next Saturday. They travel To Champaign to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini at noon.
