In this video, I explore the historic St. James at Sag Bridge (Monks Castle) in Lemont, Illinois. I share the ghost stories surrounding St. James Catholic church and cemetery. The church was nicknamed Monks Castle in 1977 after a policeman witnessed nine robed figures gliding up the cemetery’s hill late at night. St. James is also known for a documented ghost sighting that took place at the cemetery in 1897 that may or may not be connected with an alleged tragedy.
The graveyard is known for its ghostly monks and fascinating history. The property was used by Native Americans and french explorers in the late 1600’s. The land is believed to have once been an Indian village and a possible burial mound before it became a catholic cemetery for Irish immigrants in the early 1800’s. The catholic church acquired the property in the 1830’s after the land was donated by two Irishmen.
