In the summer of 1865 African American soldiers of the Illinois 29th United States Colored Troops found themselves in a land far away from home, a different world perhaps, surrounded by an unfamiliar environment and culture. Following the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, their military service brought them to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas where the fight for freedom and equality took on a different meaning and experience. What was their experience like in the borderlands? Join us in this video as we follow the path of the Illinois 29th USCT in South Texas.
