Heston, born John Charles Carter in Wilmette, Illinois in 1923, was never a child who craved attention. He was happiest when he was exploring the woods and lakes of St. Helen, Michigan, where his family had relocated when he was a child. Until he was ten, he enjoyed spending time in nature, either alone or with his father. Then his life abruptly changed.
