Boy, 13, discovered fatally wounded in park in West Ridge neighborhood, police say – Chicago Tribune

A 13-year-old boy was found fatally wounded Friday night at a park in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 10 p.m., a witness heard a loud pop and saw multiple people fleeing on foot in the 7000 block of North Sacramento Avenue in Lerner Park. The witness called police after finding a boy on a bench with a gunshot wound to the head.

The boy, identified as Lavel Winslow, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead.

According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Winslow lived in the 6300 block of North Francisco Avenue.

No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
